Ok, so this isn’t a crisis like the Earthquake in China, and it certainly won’t make the front page of the New York Times, but here at EliHorne.com I get to focus on the little things that make me say “WTF.”
I’m not sure exactly when, but at some point in the last week (I think), Google ditched their uppercase “big G” favicon for this funky little lowercase g. I’m not expert in branding, but I am an expert in “that looks stupid.”

I think SEO Black Hat said it best:
Finally, that Guy who came up with New Coke landed a new job.
Good for him. [golf clap]
T “g” doesn’t bother me nearly as much as that really strange half-grey background does.
Yeah, I hate the new favorite icon too. I find it much more difficult to eyeball which tabs are google results now. It’s probably more because my eye has been trained to look for the capital G for years rather than because the new icon is awful or anything.
I remember getting an email survey from google when they first considered changing to logo at the bottom of the SERP page to “gooooooogle.”
They were so cautious and worried about diluting the brand or confusing visitors. Now this.
The font they chose isn’t even a good lower case g. It looks like some strange orb rather than a letter. Maybe they are trying to shed the big corporate image and go “friendly and playful” like AT&T did when they dropped to lowercase.
that white to grey (gray?) gradient makes no sense since, um, the main google page doesn’t even have grey on it. Their company has a capital “G” so this really boggles me.
